Barbecue sauces can vary in flavour and there are numerous recipes used. They tend to be tomato, vinegar or mustard-based sauces, and some sauces are spicy while others are sweet and sour.

Barbecue sauces can be high in sugar

The BBQ sauces we looked at didn’t have recommended serving sizes, because they could either be used as marinades, condiments or dips. We’ve given nutritional values per 20g so you can compare them against some of the other sauces we've looked at.

Of those we selected, the Tiptree BBQ and Levi Roots Reggae Reggae Jerk/BBQ sauces are highest in sugar, both containing more than one teaspoon of sugar per 20g serving.

Although the Cattlemen’s and Jack Daniel’s sauces are relatively low in sugar, they do have more salt with 20g containing around 10% of your recommended daily intake.
