Keep up to date
Security software is only as good as its last update. With new virus and spyware threats constantly emerging, software manufacturers issue regular security updates in response to reported threats.
We recommend updating your security software at least once a week. Many programs allow you to set up your software up so it updates automatically – you can usually find this option under the settings menu option.
Take care when downloading
When you’re downloading free security software, check the name of the product carefully, as some names sound familiar. Make sure you’ve downloaded the software from a trusted source.
To ensure that you download the right program, type in the full address of the security software’s website in the address bar of your browser rather than typing the program’s name into a search engine. Also, steer clear of websites or programs asking for money.
Be vigilant
Security tools will help to protect your computer, but they’re no substitute for common sense. Here are a few simple rules that will help to keep you safe:
- Be wary of web links that you receive in emails.
- Don’t reply to emails claiming to be from a bank or another official institution; they will never ask you to update your details in this way.
- Contact your bank if you’re suspicious of an email.
- Access your bank’s website by typing your bank’s full address into the address bar of your web browser.
- Protect yourself by not storing passwords or login details on your computer, and not using a single password for everything.
