AVG-Logo

'Powerful and easy to use

AVG’s free antivirus software is powerful and easy to use. The menus and screens are simple and clear with good, strong colours – the best of the antivirus programs we tested.

Once installed, you don’t need to set anything up yourself because everything just works. The program comes with excellent built-in help and, if you’re an advanced user, there’s lots you can do if you dig down into the menus.

The program’s electronic documentation is strong. The program comes with good help files installed which provide excellent information and there is even more available in the impressive online help.

Verdict Overall, AVG is the star of the free antivirus software on test

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall

Zone-Alarm

Powerful, but does include a lot of alerts

ZoneAlarm’s free firewall – known as the Basic Firewall on the company's website – is powerful and works well. Unlike the programs built in to Windows XP and Vista, ZoneAlarm checks both outbound and inbound data.

The program does pop up quite a few alerts that can be distracting and it’s not always obvious how serious the warnings are. Overall, though, it’s a powerful program, and best used in conjunction with other free security software listed here.

Verdict Reassuringly powerful, but it does includes lots of alerts

Windows Defender

Defender

Simple to set up and use

Built in to Windows Vista or available to download from Microsoft’s website Windows Defender is powerful and easy to use. It’s simple to set it up for everyday use and the message alerts that pop up are adequate.

If you do need help, the electronic help files are quite good although online support is rather limited. The program managed to clear up spyware quickly and effectively.

Verdict Powerful anti-spyware software, but support is limited to online help
