Grow carrots in potsBest container varieties
Good for deep pots
'Sugarsnax'
This variety produces thin, pointy carrots that would be ideal in a narrow, deep container.
Although 'Sugarsnax' doesn't give the biggest of yields (we got just over 900g in our trial), the carrots taste good - they're sweet straight out of the pot.
Good for shallow pots
'Parmex'
This is an ideal choice for shallow containers, as it only occupies the top 3cm of soil.
You can expect to get a decent crop (we got 825g in our trial) of cherry tomato-sized roots.
Good cropper
'Nelson'
If you want a large crop, 'Nelson' is a good choice.
These weighed in at just under a kilo, making them one of the highest cropping varieties in our trial.
This variety produces nice finger-sized carrots.
Best yield
'Primo'
'Primo' gives an impressive yield, producing 1.2kg in our trial.
You can expect good, plump, stump-ended carrots.
Rinse off the compost and pop them straight into boiling water.
Old, but popular
'Early Nantes'
'Early Nantes' is an old variety that's still popular.
It proved its worth in our trial, with a respectable 950g of fat, slightly tapered roots.
Pale but interesting
'Rainbow'
If you want something a bit different, try 'Rainbow'.
This should give a respectable crop of pale white, yellow and pale orange roots – though this hardly constitutes a rainbow...
Bright purple
'Purple Haze'
Who said carrots have to be orange?
'Purple haze' is true to its name, producing bright purple carrots.
Sadly, the purple is only skin deep - the inside is a disappointing orange.
The crop was small in our trial.
