Other ways to find an NHS dentist
Since April 2006, dental patients in Wales do not have to be ‘registered’ with a dentist, but you can carry on visiting the same dentist. A dentist can still keep a list of patients who receive regular treatment.
There are several ways to find an NHS dentist near you that is taking on patients:
- Use the NHS Direct Wales search facility
- Call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47
- Local Health Boards in Wales plan and allocate health services and can tell you about your nearest NHS dentist - you can find contact details for your Local Health Board on the NHS Direct Wales website.
Find a private dentist
To find a private dentist near you, you can search a database of dentists on the British Dental Association website. You could also find it useful to speak to friends and family to see if they can recommend one.
Remember, an NHS dentist cannot tell you they'll only take your children on as NHS patients if they take you on as a private patient.
Find an emergency dentist in Wales
Dental bleeding that will not stop, acute spreading infection, or damage to the teeth or jaws as the result of an accident are classed as dental emergencies. Toothache is not classed as a dental emergency. If you need advice on pain relief contact the All Wales Dental Helpline on 0845 6010128 or contact your dentist.
Emergency NHS dentist
In Wales you don't need to be registered with an NHS dentist to receive treatment. If you need treatment in an emergency, try to make an appointment with a dentist. You can search for one on the NHS Direct website.
If you need treatment out-of-hours contact your Local Health Board, which is responsible for arranging out-of-hours dental services. You can get advice – and treatment if necessary – by calling their local number, which should be left on your dentist’s answerphone. You can also find contact details for Local Health Boards on the NHS Direct Wales website.

Emergency private dentist
Private dentists are obliged to provide emergency cover for their registered patients. We suggest that you ask them about their emergency arrangements when you first become a patient.
