Step-by-step guide to safely removing a large tree branch
While a decent pair of secateurs will easily cut through live wood that's up to 25mm thick, for thicker branches you'll need a pruning saw - see our pruning saw reviews for Best Buys.
Follow our step-by-step pictorial guide to find out where to cut and how to leave a clean incision.
1The first cut
Make the first cut on the underside of the branch about 30cm from the main trunk. Saw about half way through.
2The second cut
Make the second cut about 1cm further away from the trunk on top of the branch. Saw until the branch falls.
3Take the weight
Support the weight of the cut branch and remove it. Ensure your footing is good as it's likely to be fairly heavy.
4Cut the main stump
Cut off the main stump flush with the trunk, once again making the first cut under the branch and sawing half way through.
5Cut carefully
Avoid cutting into the swelling at the base of the branch as this has been shown to lead to infection and decay.
6Finishing off
Leave a clean, smooth surface as this will lessen chances of infection and will allow the wound to heal more quickly.
