Always check sellers' feedback before buying on eBay

The vast majority of buyers and sellers on eBay are genuine and the goods they are offering match their descriptions.

But in any marketplace, there are bound to be rogue traders, or those who are willing to stretch the truth when describing the goods they are selling in order to secure a better price.

There are five simple steps you can take to avoid running into problems:

  • Always check a seller’s feedback from other buyers. If you are unsure, don’t buy
  • If you have an unsatisfactory experience with an eBay seller, leave feedback to warn other buyers
  • If you’re nervous about buying intangible items such as concert tickets, go directly to the authorised retailer (this may be the concert organiser, the venue or another authorised representative)
  • For items costing over £100 you may be better protected using your credit card directly, if this option is offered. For security when going through the online ‘checkout’, make sure the website address begins with https: and look for a padlock symbol on-screen
