Which? Holiday tips
Stay in touch with family or friends whilst you're away
- If you're not sure you'd like to holiday alone, visit a museum, restaurant or the cinema on your own first, or organise a weekend break somewhere you're familiar with.
- Take your trip before or after peak times, such as half-term and school summer holidays. You can cut the cost of your air fare and accommodation. Plus, attractions and restaurants will be less crowded
- If you want interaction with others, even if it’s just a ‘hello’ at breakfast, choose a small b&b, guesthouse or hotel where you know you'll get the personal touch. If you want anonymity, go for a larger hotel.
Pop into a cafe to check your map
- Know how to get to and from the airport or station to your destination, and have at least your first night’s accommodation booked for peace of mind.
- Always look confident. Keep a low profile and dress down to avoid attracting any unwanted attention.
- Keep in touch. Always try to let a family member know your planned itinerary and contact details – and keep your mobile charged.
- If you need to refer to a map, do it in a café over a coffee or sit in a park on a bench – avoid standing on the street looking confused.
- Keep busy at meal times. Take a book, write up the day's events in your travel diary, catch up on your postcards or study a phrasebook and learn a few essential words.
- Stay away from isolated places. Keep to well-lit areas if you're walking alone at night.
- Go to a festival! People are often more friendly when there is something going on around them – and it’s a great way to see how local communities celebrate events.
