Travelling by car was often the cheapest option

Many of us will consider using our cars when it comes to travelling across the UK.

In addition to comparing ticket prices on public transport, we looked at the potential cost to travel by car between our three routes (London to Glasgow, Birmingham to Edinburgh and Manchester to Exeter).

Low costs

Based on a new 1.4 litre engine Ford Focus doing 42.8 miles to the gallon, going by car was often the cheapest way to travel, if you consider the cost of petrol alone. With more than one person in the car, the relative cost of car travel is even lower.

A return trip from London to Glasgow would cost around £81. This price does not take into consideration being stuck in traffic, though, or making any stops along the way – both of which use more petrol.

Neither does it consider the age of the car or its level of wear and tear – the older a car and the worse its condition, the less economical it is on petrol. The cost of the upkeep of a car must also be considered.

Versatile

However, the value of a journey isn’t just about cost – it’s also about how easy it is. From a stress point of view, travelling by car can be the best option, especially if you’re travelling with older relatives, young children or a pet.

The car also allows you to set your own timetable. You can choose a convenient departure time and when and where you have breaks – and for how long. And luggage is less restricted than it is on public transport.

Road rage?

But not everyone enjoys driving. Some people find it stressful and tiring, especially on long motorway journeys. Being stuck in traffic for prolonged periods of time is also something many of us like to avoid, as is getting lost!

And the environmental cost is higher than that of travelling by coach or train.
