Using mobiles abroadPlanning ahead
Before you leave, always find out what your provider charges for roaming in the country you're travelling to.
Some mobile operators charge flat rates for calls and text messages to the UK from a given country no matter what time of day it is, or what foreign network you use. In this case you can simply turn on your phone when you arrive and use the network it defaults to automatically.
There are exceptions. Three, Virgin and Vodafone charge different call rates depending on which foreign network you use.
In these instances, it’s worth finding out which network is cheapest before you leave, so that you can manually select it when you arrive (see your mobile handbook for instructions on how to do this).
