Choosing a child car seat Car carrycots for infants

We don't generally recommend carrycots

We don't generally recommend carrycots

In our child car seat tests, we haven't found many carrycots and lie-flat child car seats that protect children adequately. For this reason, we don't generally recommend them.

If you already own one, we suggest you buy an alternative Group 0+ child safety seat for use in the car.

Our child car seats review reveals the best child car seats in Group 0+, some of which cost as little as £75.

Using carrycots instead of child car seats

If you have a carrycot for your baby and there’s nothing else you can use, it’s better than nothing at all.

If you have to use a carrycot, place it across the back seat, as close to the middle as you can. This may use up more space, but it means the baby is less vulnerable in a crash.

Place the baby’s head as far from the door as possible, to try to avoid contact with the door in a crash.

You should keep travel times to a minimum for all newborns.
