The Babystyle Oyster pushchair can be used as a travel system, provided you also buy a compatible car seat. It is sold with a rain cover and hood which has a viewing window - but does the Babystyle Oyster pushchair work well? We put it to the test to find out

It's just ok...
We have the black one and loved the look, we bought the buggy carry cot and maxi cosi seat with adapters. love the fly screen that comes out of the hood and in the summer this was in constant use. As for the adapters for maxi cosi car seat they were more hassle that they are worth on a few occations i felt like chucking the whole thing, they are easy to put on but a nightmare to take car seat out and put straight in the car. We also have the same problem as others have said with front wheels and can agree that this buggy is not suitable for uneven terrain. My son is now 20 months and we are having to buy a new buggy as this is too small although i beleive we were told it should last till he is 3/4 i think size pending but he is under 2!!!! Also agree with other reviews that they don't seem to sit in it they are more slouching and also it doesn't lay flat!!!! in all honesty I would not recommend this buggy or system to anyone

Marmite: love it or hate it?
Absolutely hate it!marmite? no not that... the oyster! This is a very compact pushchair I have to admit and it folds down to the smallest of pushchairs I have seen. However, this one redeeming feature (well two- it is cheap as chips too!) is not enough to put up with. It is heavy to steer and does not cope well with uneven pavements or curbs, the chassis easily tips. It is heavy to push, doesn't fold with ease. I personally find the fabric cheap and nasty and the hood canopy does not keep its shape. The carrycot is very small and not well padded. The worst fault of all though is that the seat itself is not actually a seat and so my child has always slumped on it rather than sat in it.

We bought the whole oyster travel system before our daughter was born and generally we've been pretty happy with it. It's light and easy to push and manoeuvre, quick and simple to put up and down and the chassis fits easily into my tiny car boot. That was one of the main reasons we bought it. We have to take everything off including one of the wheels but it fits! I totally agree about it not being great on bad surfaces. I'm finding my daughter gets bumped around quite a lot which is frustrating if she's asleep. The wheels seem to just get stuck on anything if you're going up and down kerbs and it feels a bit rickety. Good value for money though but not good for long walks, probably best for quick trips around town or unless you live somewhere that has smooth pavements!

Not an all-terrain pushchair
Thanks for your feedback 'Nice looking' about the Babystyle Oyster not living up to the poor paving conditions in your area.

The Babystyle Oyster is a great travel system for urban mums, but it is probably not the best choice for anyone who lives in an area where the paving is really poor - in that case you might be better off going for an all-terrain model with foam or rubber tyres.

All small wheeled pushchairs like the Oyster will struggle if they are used constantly on rough terrain because they are designed for pavements and shopping centres, not smoothing out lumps and bumps!

Check out our all-terrain best buys if you live in an area with more challenging terrain.

Nice looking but too many problems
Great pushchair if pottering around town or shopping centres but has not lived up to expectations and caused too many problems. We too had problems with front wheels. Eventually sorted with a big bolts from b and q! The handle often sticks when trying to fold it up which can get frustrating. The hood also had lost shape and now the back wheels are very loose and wobble. Think this is mainly due to constant almost everyday use and poor paving conditions where we live. Would only recomend if not planning to give it a hard life, we have used it for 15 months and it has suffered.

Nice features, but not reliable
Had this buggy for just eight months, shared use between a cossato buggy which we use for all journeys unless we are using the car but from day one had niggly issues. A rear tyre was flat, and despite couple of spare inner tubes from the local bike shop did not stay inflated for very long. Eventually got is sorted through the people we bought it from - Babystyle insist you go through the retailer and were not helpful. We've had the ubiqitous front wheel buckling, and now the rod that holds the front wheel in has lost one cap, which just seems pressed on with no threads to attach it, and it seems nigh on impossible to get a new spare, so off to B&Q to cobble something together. Shame really, nice look pram, good features, compact & modular, but with it seems that they cut a few corners with the design and a few basic (and most likely cheap) changes could have brilliant.PS - don't bother with the shiny plush version, it scratches if you look at it wrong and the material is pretty bulky and hard to fold away/store

Thanks for your comment about the bassinet, but we are a bit confused to hear that you think it is not safe because it does not have straps. Very few have straps to hold the baby in place, because they are not intended to be used once the baby can sit up on its own.

Most are supplied with D-rings so that you can attach your own harness if you want to.

We hope that the rest of the pushchair meets your satisfaction.

Excellent pushchair
I have been using this pushchair over two years (since my boy was born) and I am absolutely happy. The pushchair is easy to fold/unfold and is very compact. Handle has 3 positions so it is suitable for me (5.5 feet) and for my husband (6.4 feet) too. It is easy to make it clean and my pushchair looks still great even after two years. There are some scratches as we travelled by plane with this pushchair and I must say that this one is not the best to travel by plane as you cannot fold it with one hand only, so when you travel on your own by plane that's a bit difficult. I have carry cot as well, it is very cosy, but there is no way that baby can fit in it till he/she is 6 months unless really tiny. Our boy was there till 5 months and then he grew from it. He is now 2 years 2 months and he is nearly touching the hood, but by his legs still cannot reach the feet support. I think he will grow out of this pushchair soon, however we do not need the pushchair much now anyway. But it seems that child older than 2.5 year will not fit there, however depends how big your child is. Overall I'm very pleased with this pushchair and definitely good buy. Lots of my friends bought second pushchair as the first one did not work for them, but I haven’t considered to buy something else as this one was the best compromise (you can get pushchair best for everything!)

Dear CMR400172903,

Thank you for your comments on the Babystyle Oyster.

We are obviously disappointed to hear about your experience with this pushchair. Your feedback suggests that it has not suited your lifestyle in a hot climate, but we would emphasise that we are testing it in the UK and our tests are not carried out with use in hotter climates than ours specifically in mind.

It is interesting that you note the seat wobbling - this is common with the kinds of pushchairs that have reversible seats, which are attached to the frame in just two places. However we usually find that this rocking stops with the weight of a baby in the seat. We do look at how firmly they are attached during our safety testing.

It sounds as if an all-terrain pushchair might have been a better choice for coping with your bumpy Greek roads, but we are glad to hear that you have found a pushchair that suits your lifestyle a bit more.

A icandy wannabe that FAILS!
After much research, i went for this as i had really wanted Icandy but as i was living abroad i could not get one either ordered nor shipped to the country where i lived. The initial thoughts were very positive, setting up easy enough and looked and felt easy to manouver around, bumpy uneven Greek roads.Unfortunately this was short lived. The front wheels buckled after maybe a month, any small bump or raise in the roads caused utter standstill and pure refusal to move. The material cheap, not suited to sentitive baby skin and caused extreme sweating fro my daughter, even with a pure cotton sheet laid down between her and seat. The sun shade within the hood, wonderful idea, BUT stretch ridiculously after a couple of uses, i dreaded using it and favoured a cotton sarong tied over the pram. The seat chassis appeared not to be secure, apparenlty this was normal, but the way it rocked with my 6 month old concerned me greatly. The BABYSTYLE oyster car seat was made out of the same cheap in breathable material so m daughter just came out dripping wet after being in it for a short trip. The folding down of the pushchair with seat in place was a great bonus and a major reason for me purchasing it. BUT although fairly simple to fold down, the safety catch to keep it in place was awkward to use. Many many times i caught my fingers in the frame on unfolding it, painfull full stop.Colour packs great idea, shame material so cheap. The babystyle, to me seams to want to be one of the big boys in the premium rnge with quite a hefty price tag, but should step back and have a reality check...it isnt premium.I have now a Icandy Apple 2nd hand and love it!!! Save yourself the bother and dont bother with the Babaystyle Oyster.
