Baby monitors: Compare features & prices Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature 1082 review

An intercom, room temperature monitor and night light are just some of the features that could make the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature 1082 audio baby monitor a hit with parents. Despite all the extra features, the manufacturer maintains that this baby monitor is intuitively designed and easy to use - a claim we were keen to put to the test.

Great value product
After using another baby monitor which lost signal constantly in my big house, I decided to use which best buys and I'm glad I did. This monitor is so much better, we have a farm house and it can pick up our son's sounds from every room and in the garage too! I haven't tested it in the garden yet but with the signal being at full bars in the garage I can't see it being a problem. The sensitivity settings can be changed and on the highest level you can hear even the smallest of baby's sounds, even on the middle setting you we can hear baby's little grumbles. The talk back option is a lovely option, and the nightlight is a nice idea too - not that it's very bright, but it lets of a gentle glow which can be handy in the middle of the night and you don't want to blind your baby by turning on the main light but don't expect to be able to change a nappy just with that light. The only slight negative I can find with it would be how quickly the battery gets low - so make sure you have the charging dock in the room you spend the most time in, as you can still have the baby monitor on whilst it's on the charging dock.Very happy with this product!

I think it's excellent. The range is impressive; I can use it at the far end of our house, which is quite a distance. I can use it outside and the signal is always strong. The sensitivity of the LED sound level indicator is well calibrated. When the baby cries, you can immediately see a clear visual cue, but happy little sleeping noises do not register. I've not experienced any interference problems with my unit.

Thank you very much for getting in touch to let us know your experiences with this monitor.

Our tests found that range was very good both indoors and outdoors so we asked Tommee Tippee for their thoughts on what could be happening. They said that advertised range is calculated in the same way across the industry and assumes a best case, straight line of view. If units are positioned next to very thick walls or metal reinforced structures range can drop. They would advise checking this when you first set up the monitor.

However, they would like to hear from you and other consumers experiencing any significant variations via their customer careline (freephone 0500 97 98 99) so that they can arrange for the monitors to be returned for testing.

Thank you very much for getting in touch to let us know about the problems you've had with your monitor and interference.

We didn't experience any problems with interference in our tests so we asked Tommee Tippee for their feedback.

They said that DECT units should not be experiencing this type of interference and they haven't received any similar complaints through their customer careline. They'd be very interested to hear from you and any other consumers who've experienced similar problems so that they can arrange to have the units returned and tested.

You can contact their careline on freephone 0500 97 98 99.

Sorry to hear you've had problems with your monitor but I'm afraid that we can't comment on the version of this monitor that uses a movement pad as this was not what was tested. We tested the audio only version.

Temperature reads wrong
In general this is a good monitor and it picks up the sound okay although sometimes there is a delay in pick up. The main problem I have is that the temperature gauge reads a couple of degrees higher than the room actually is (as we have an accurate Groegg in the room). With temperature being really important with babies I think this slightly dangerous. I have also found that the belt clip doesn't work all that well and falls off. Overall though it does it's job.

Range is unimpressive
I have bought bought this monitor on the strength of your review, but I have been disappointed. The connection over distance is very poor and changes constantly, each time I thought I had it set up (the parent unit showed a bar) it would loose the connection after a few minutes and start beeping. I have two different bt monitors, which cover the same distance effortlessly!! Very disappointed!!

Not impressed
I bought this monitor mostly to keep mind in peace that the pad is detecting my baby breathing at all time. Worked very well in a moses basket, but absolutely useless in a cot as baby needs to have EXACTLY all back on the sensor pad, otherwise the alarm will be set on. After several weeks of being up and running to check our baby 10 times a night (as the alarm was ringing each time baby slightly moved) we simply disconected the device. There is as well a problem with a signal - it looses connectivity very frequently (every 5 minutes or so) for precious 5-10 sec. Suddenly it goes silent... and than somehow connects again. What if something happened within those 10 sec? 10 sec is a long time in baby life - it's enough to try to stand up in a cot, bang a head and stay unconcious? Well, luckily our baby room is just next to our bedroom and we can hear everything anyway, but if you need to rely on a monitor - buy something different.Really not impressed.

Very sensitive to interference?
Although good on paper, this monitor appears to be very sensitive to interference from other electronics. For example, every time a fan heater (on a thermostat) in my daughter's bedroom cut in, the parent unit would lose all signal (from previously having full signal, and being less than 10 metres away from the baby unit). Similarly, sat next to a computer, the same thing would happen as soon as the CD drive kicked in. This wouldn't be such a problem, except the parent unit makes a very annoying beeping noise when the signal is lost - leading to a night of very poor sleep! For reference, I sent back the first monitor I bought, assuming it was a one off fault. Unfortunately I've had exactly the same problem with the replacement - which is now going back as well.
