The Affordable Energy Campaign Energy bill cutbacks

This Christmas was a cold one for many, after last year's steep rise in energy prices. The average energy bill is now £1,345.

We took to the streets to find out what this meant for consumers over Christmas.

Are you cutting back this Christmas?

We've been collecting stories and experiences from hundreds of UK consumers about their Christmas cutbacks. Below is a small selection of what people are cutting back on this year. We took these views to energy secretary Chris Huhne, to show him how some people are really struggling in the wake of energy price rises.

Cheaper and less food

Rhonda

'We can't afford to put the heating on or use the hot water this winter.'

Diane

'I have to cut back on presents, food, excursions for the children, everything will have to be trimmed and not just the tree.'

Carolyn

'We are collecting logs from the local woods and having log fires instead of having the heating on.'

Cheaper presents to buy food

David

'As a pensioner, I have a limited income and the increased cost of energy will mean cut backs in all spending, and the wearing of thicker pullovers.'

Kim

'This Christmas is going to be much more frugal, with spending less money on presents, Christmas food and outings. Bah humbug. But nothing should stop the good will and love that goes out to my family and friends.'

Only heat single rooms

D Butler

'I have already cut back heating by not switching on until my family return home in the evenings - I am retired - I visit the library or shops during the day.'

John

'With a wife pregnant with twins and two young children it is impossible to cut back on heating and electric. Goodness knows how we are going to afford it!'
