Our smart meter campaign The ideal smart meter installation

Man reading meter

Waiting in for a delivery, or for someone to come round and read your meter, can be really frustrating. That's why alongside our smart meter challenge, we're also asking your energy company to follow our top ten principles for a good smart meter installation.

Before your smart meter installation

  • Your energy supplier should offer flexible appointment times and explain to you what to expect on installation day, particularly on how long it will take.
  • They should tell you how often they will be collecting information about their energy use from their smart meter. They should also tell you that you have the choice to opt out of this data collection.

On the day your smart meter is installed

  • They should confirm the arrival time on installation day and warn you if they are running late.
  • They should leave everything as they found it.
  • Your installer should spend time explaining to you how the smart meter and energy monitor works.
  • They should leave you with their contact details so you can get in touch if they have a question or complaint.
  • They should make sure both the meter and the monitor are working correctly before leaving your house.
  • If they can't fit the meter for any reason, they should let you know exactly why.

When you have your new smart meter

  • They should contact you after the installation to ask if you have any questions.
  • They should follow up any complaints promptly giving you regular updates on the progress of your complaint and an estimate of how long it will take to resolve.

Smart meter installation

We wanted to find out what happens when you have a smart meter installed. So we asked Which? Senior Campaigner Jenny Driscoll to let us film her installation. First Utility (who have signed up to our smart meter challenge) came round and talked us through the process.
