Food price rises What Which? wants

Rising food prices are having an enormous impact on the lives of UK consumers, with many changing what they eat and where they shop because they are so concerned about the cost of food.

We believe that the government and retailers need to take action on the rising cost of food, ensuring that consumers don't have to absorb the cost of food price rises unnecessarily.

Action on high food prices

We'd like to see retailers and the government working towards:

  • a more open debate on food pricing and greater scrutiny of food price rises in the UK and what can be done to address the problem.
  • greater attention to the impact of food prices on people's ability to eat healthily and sustainably.
  • more responsible price promotions so that retailers offer genuine value for money with more straightforward discounts.
  • clearer and more prominent unit pricing – so that people can compare like with like and easily work out which is the cheapest.
