Ban excessive surcharging
On the 23 June Europe voted to keep the proposed ban on excessive surcharging in the Consumer Rights Directive.
We were delighted when the European Parliament agreed to cap debit card surcharges across Europe via an amendment in the Consumer Rights Directive.
The agreement was made across Europe and member states are obliged to incorporate the changes into their laws by June 2014.
UK government take action early
We've been lobbying financial secretary Mark Hoban to implement the ban in the UK earlier by amending the Payment Services Regulations.
The Treasury has now confirmed it will implement the ban on excessive surcharges by bringing the Consumer Rights Directive into effect in the UK by the end of 2012.
