Watchdog not Lapdog Watchdog gallery

Between 17 January to 10 February we encouraged dog owners to submit photographs of their pooches to front the Watchdog not Lapdog campaign. We were overwhelmed when we received nearly 200 photographs of dogs ready to do the job.

'If you are looking for a charismatic, curious, competent and most importantly, courageous canine, then trusted companion Milo is your boy! His natural gundog ability allows him to save consumers from the dog-eat-dog world of financial sales.'

Some entries came with a selection of photographs, others with written reasons for why their dog should win, and a handful went the extra mile setting up Facebook profiles or composing CVs for their canine friends!

Top dog

We selected our top five dogs and asked you to choose which dog should front the campaign. On Friday 2 March Milo became the face of the Watchdog not Lapdog campaign.

Milo will be representing consumers to ensure the Financial Services Bill creates a watchdog that looks out for consumers rather than a lapdog that panders to the banks.  Later this year, we'll be asking members of parliament to adopt our watchdog.

The finalists

Milo beat Darcy, Jackson, Lupo and Unushka for the position. Find out why their owners thought the following dogs would make suitable watchdogs:

Darcy

'Darcy's small but protective nature means she will see challenges through to the end. Easily recognisable as an attractive assertive 'watchdog', Jack Russell's have been used for centuries to represent trusted brands. Darcy is a quick thinker, always alert and efficient in whatever situation she is presented with!'

Jackson

'Jackson would make a great financial watchdog because he is always on the ball and is good at sniffing out situations. He is very inquisitive and likes to paw over things. Jackson can be vocal in putting his point of view across and is always supportive of the underdog!'

Lupo

'Born on 1 April, but don't let that fool you, Lupo is happiest by your side or sat on your lap (he weighs six stone!) Always ready to play, his long nose can sniff out squirrels from miles away and his natural guarding instincts mean he’d make the perfect Watchdog.'

Unushka

'Unushka, known as Noochi, is definitely no lapdog. She lets us know if anyone's around and the neighbours say they feel reassured knowing she is next door.'
