The BMW X6 has pretty much got the 4x4 off-road coupe niche to itself. Potential rivals like the Audi Q5 and Range Rover Sport feel much more conventional than BMW's radical X6 but there's no denying it performs very well indeed.

Is the BMW X6 maybe a niche too far? We think so - a four-seater 4x4 off-road coupe is the answer to question nobody ever asked. It may have Audi and Range Rover licked on the performance front (it's surprisingly capable on tarmac and hugely fast in X6M guise) but it's certainly no off-road king.

The BMW X6 was only launched in 2008 and it hasn't been a runaway success - so finding a used example could be a struggle. BMW's recent reliability record, according to our survey, is merely average. On the plus side, the X6 loses its value more severely than the BMW X5 so you may find some used bargains.
