Latest first drives Mercedes-Benz SLK (2011-) Jun 2011
The third generation of Mercedes' entry-level roadster features smaller, more efficient engines and styling inspired by the marque's flagship supercar: the SLS AMG. But are these changes good enough for the SLK to take on the likes of the BMW Z4 and Porsche Boxster?
What's new?
The latest Mercedes SLK has been given a makeover to bring it into line with the firm's new designs. The overall shape remains similar to the last model. but the headlights and front end now look much more purposeful. This is apparently an effort to encourage more male buyers, who may have been put off by the 'ladies who lunch' image the SLK acquired.
What's it up against?
The key rivals are the BMW Z4 and the Porsche Boxster - and each are very good in their own way. While the Porsche is still the best driver's car, it's starting to look a bit long in the tooth. The Z4, although it's two years old, still looks fresh thanks to a bold design. It's also the most refined cruiser of the trio, and the top-end twin-turbo models are incredibly rapid.

Why should I buy one?
The SLK has a very desirable image, and the new 1.8-litre petrol engine in the BlueEfficiency model we tested is pretty economical too. So although it's expensive, it should be a good investment.
It's also comfortable and the interior is great. Mercedes really seems to have cracked the sat nav and stereo system set-up - it just makes sense.
There's a wealth of safety kit and it's good to drive, although it manages both comfort and sportiness, without quite excelling at either.
What's it's Achilles' heel?
The boot is small, it's hard to get into and visibility is poor due to the low seating position. It's not the definitive driver's car, either - and nor is it the supreme cruiser that it could be.
When can I buy one?
The third-generation Mercedes SLK is available from dealers now. Prices start at £29,970.
