The 2004-2010 Citroen C4 was a much more adventurous proposition than the dull Xsara it replaced - and perhaps a bit too 'out there' for many. Underneath its boldly-detailed body it's fairly conventional, however, with a choice of economical diesel or refined petrol engines. Rear legroom's not great, and the interior's crammed with confusing controls and wacky features, but if you can live with this, it's cheaper secondhand than a Focus or Golf. Worth a look? New Citroën C4 reviews

This first-generation C4, sold 2004-2010, has been phased out in favour of a more conventional-looking model (launched late 2010). End-of-line ex-demo cars are still on sale on Citroen forecourts, though the discounts aren't as attractive as you'd hope for. Haggle hard. The 1.6 HDI diesel will hold its value the best.

Used Citroën C4 reviews

Early Citroen C4 hatchbacks - five-door, or three-door 'Coupe' - are not yet banger money, but it shouldn't be long before prices fall. The facelifted 2008-2010 range will also become cheaper once more of the all-new Mk2 models come onto the market. Many secondhand buyers are scared off by the C4's complex electronics and its poor record for reliability; it has suffered a lot of electrical issues. A decent diesel will be cheap to run, however.
