The Citroen C5 is a large family car, available as a saloon or estate. It's roomy, comfortable and well-equipped, with a wide choice of engines, and it's popular amongst caravan-towers who like its adjustable, self-levelling suspension. The Mk2 model (from spring 2008) has a much more upmarket cabin, and comes with the option of conventional steel-spring suspension, if the prospect of the Hydractive system is rather scary. But which models are the best bet? Read on for the full Which? verdict.

Pros and cons

    + Roomy, comfortable

+ Estates have very big boot

    + Cheap to buy second-hand

    - Rapid depreciation from new

    - Suspect reliability and complex to repair

    - Interiors aren't the most hard-wearing

New Citroën C5 reviews

There are generous discounts available on most Citroens, and plenty of incentives with the C5, but do compare deals against all opposition, including more reliable Japanese offerings. It's well-equipped, however, and the diesel estates hold their value a bit better than the other versions.

Roomy C5 estate has its plus-points, but is more attractive as a used buy

Used Citroën C5 reviews

Citroen's C5 Mk1 has a reputation for being a little troublesome and its sophisticated Hydractive suspension is expensive to fix. However, it is extremely good value for money (buyers seem to be put off by its complexity) and the estate is one of the largest in its class. The Mk2 car is a different prospect; lower-spec cars use conventional suspension, which may be less problematic, but have suffered problems with transmission, brakes and electrics. Either way, the relatively high depreciation (loss in value) means that these are cheap cars to buy secondhand, so worth a punt. Find out more in our full rundown.
