We've been crying out for a hot hatch version of Ford's bestseller since it was launched in 2008. The Fiesta's agile handling makes it a natural candidate for more power, which hopefully should equal more fun.

What is the Ford Fiesta ST?
Strictly speaking, this is a concept car at the moment. But it offers a very definite hints about the production Fiesta ST, which is due on sale next year.

Why should I buy a Ford Fiesta ST?
We'd be very surprised - and disappointed - if the Fiesta ST isn't a blast to drive. Ford has a reputation for building great-handling cars, and the Fiesta is one of its finest. The humble hatchback also has a motorsport pedigree now, thanks to the Fiesta WRC rally car.
It's likely to be good value, too - expect prices to undercut the rival VW Polo GTI - and it certainly looks distinctive. Its bold, honeycomb grille echoes the new Focus ST, while a dramatic rear diffuser reveals a twin-exit exhaust.
A lowered stance, widened wheelarches filled with 17in alloys and full bodykit mirror the styling of the Fiesta WRC. Subtle it ain't - especially in the bright 'Molten Orange' of the concept car.
What engine will the Ford Fiesta ST use?
The 1.6-litre Ecoboost petrol engine in the Fiesta ST develops 180bhp - on par with the rival Polo and enough to propel it to 62mph in 'less than seven seconds'.
Yet the turbocharged, four-cylinder unit is reasonably efficient, too; CO2 emissions are quoted as 'lower than 140g/km'.
When can I buy the Ford Fiesta ST?
Not long now. We expect the production car to arrive in showrooms in Spring 2012, although you can't officially order it yet. Early indications are that the car will be three-door-only and fitted exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox.
