What do I need to know about the Lexus GS450h?
Lexus claims the new model has an all-new exterior, however it continues to fit in with the brand’s constrained styling, building on the appearance of the LF-Gh concept that was previewed at the New York Auto Show earlier in the year.
A lot of the exterior design is in the same vein as the Lexus CT 200h, such as the trapezoid upper grille and slanted lower grille. This isn’t a car you’ll mistake for anything else other than a Lexus.
The interior has been given a more significant overhaul, adopting what Lexus is calling a ‘driver-focused cockpit’. This means every aspect of the driving position has been scrutinised to find the optimal positioning of controls, maximise driver comfort and reduce any distraction and fatigue.
There a few nice technology additions, like energy-saving air conditioning, the world’s largest in-car multi-information display at 12.3-inches and a choice of audio systems.
Safety is also another area for increased development in the GS, adding an Advanced Pre-Crash Safety system with a Driver Motor Camera – this camera monitors various aspects of the driver’s face, including the degree of eye opening and if the eyes are closed, and can alert a driver of a potential dangerous collision earlier.

Why should I buy a Lexus GS450h?
As you’d expect from Lexus, comfort is key to the success of this car. And despite the wheelbase of the new GS being the same as the previous third generation model, Lexus has assured that interior space has increased for front and rear passengers. The brand also claims to have increased door apertures to make it easier to get in and out of the GS.
Seats back and front have been developed to allow for more head and leg room and the boot shape has been revised, thanks to a new, more compact, suspension layout. That means the boot now has a wider opening, is longer and has a lower deck height than its predecessor. And because the hybrid battery is now in a stacked format, the boot space has increased to 450 litres from 395, according to our test.
On top of all that, Lexus remains one of the most reliable car manufacturers, as shown in the results of the 2011 Which? Car Survey
What engines will be available in the Lexus GS 450h?
The new GS will be available with the second generation of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system. This pairs a high-performance nickel-metal hydride battery with a 3.5-litre Atkinson cycle V6 engine. The result is 286bhp and 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds (claimed).
How much will the Lexus GS 450h cost?
Prices will be announced closer to release, but prices will begin above the £40,000 bracket.
