What is the Mazda CX-5?
The CX-5 is Mazda’s first attempt at a compact crossover SUV, shaped to take on the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Kuga, as well as the Subaru XV, which was launched at the same location as part of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
It may look familiar to the trained eye – that’s because Mazda previewed the CX-5 at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, under the guise of the Minagi concept. The key feature of the previously-presented model was the ‘Skyactiv’ eco technology, and that’s made it through to the production car – the first time it’s featured on any Mazda. And the final car has also continued Mazda’s ‘Kodo soul of motion’ design philosophy, also showcased with the Minagi.
Why should I buy a Mazda CX-5?
The CX-5 is 4.5-metres in length and features solid, muscular SUV looks with an aerodynamic and relatively lightweight package. This combines to offer strong fuel economy and reduced emissions, according to Mazda.
The SUV characteristics should also make for a fairly roomy interior, and the Japanese carmaker says generous front legroom is combined with class-leading rear legroom – perfect if you’re considering the CX-5 as an alternative to a family hatchback. And more good news is ample boot space, offering 500-litres of loading capacity with the seats up. The rear seats are, for the first time ever, independent 40/20/40, too.
What engines does the Mazda CX-5 use?
The Mazda CX-5 features all-new petrol and diesel engines, and from the sounds of it, they’re going to be relatively cheap to run in comparison to some direct rivals.
The cheapest to own will be the eco-friendly Skyactiv 165bhp 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol powered model and the Skyactiv 2.2-litre diesel, with a two-stage turbocharger available in 150bhp and 170bhp outputs.
Mazda hopes to achieve 47.1mpg and emissions of 139g/km of CO2 from front-wheel--drive manual petrol model and 62.8mpg and 119g/km from the 150bhp diesel.
Four-wheel-drive is also available across the CX-5 range alongside all-new manual and automatic gearboxes.

How much will the Mazda CX-5 cost?
No official figure has been released yet, however, we expect it to be in sync with direct competitors with a starting price around the £16,000 to £18,000 mark.
