What is the new Mercedes B-class?
While the next A-class is transforming into a conventional hatchback à la Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series, the B-class stays true to its compact MPV roots.
Why should I buy a Mercedes B-class?
It's a bit of a looker compared to the current car, yet remains usefully spacious inside.
Interior quality feels up there with the best in class, and there are plenty of 'big car' options available, like the touch-screen 'Comand' multimedia system with internet access, Distronic radar-guided cruise control and intelligent braking system that helps perform emergency stops if it senses an imminent crash.
A multi-link rear suspension set-up should improve ride comfort and sharpen-up the handling. There's even a Sport package with lower suspension and a quicker steering rack.
What engines will the Mercedes B-class use?
The most popular engine is likely to be the 1.8-litre CDI diesel, which is available with 107bhp or 134bhp. Mercedes claims very impressive sub-100g/km CO2 emissions and fuel economy of around 70mpg.
A 2.1-litre diesel will also be offered, with 168bhp or 201bhp, plus a 1.6 petrol turbo will follow later.
An electric B-class is also a strong possibility - Mercedes has built an 'energy space' into the floorpan, which could be used to hold batteries.

When can I buy the Mercedes B-class?
You'll be able to order the B-class very soon, although it's not expected in UK showrooms until Spring 2012.
Prices have yet to be announced, but don't expect much change from £20,000. That three-pointed star doesn't come cheap.

Class: People carriers/MPVs
VW's Bulli is a small, six-seater MPV concept that draws heavily on VW's past, particularly the Sixties Bus. It's about the same length as a Volkswagen Polo, yet it's roomy inside thanks to the square sides and relatively wide stance.
