Car clubs: prices

If you don't need a car all of the time and don't want the expense and hassle of owning one, one of the UK's many car clubs could be the ideal solution. Figures from Carplus.org.uk show that, providing you drive less than 8,000 miles in a year, car clubs could save you up to £3,500 annually, although most users would save a lot less than this.

Most car clubs charge an annual or monthly membership fee, plus then pay-as-you-go fees, billed each month.

Hire from car clubs includes fuel, breakdown and car insurance cover, car tax and maintenance.

Car clubs' pay-as-you-go charges are usually based on a combination of time (from around £5 to £10 an hour, depending on the company, the type of vehicle hired and whether you hire a car on a weekday or weekend) and miles travelled (typically around 25p a mile).

Some car clubs offer inclusive miles, beyond which the driver pays extra. Other car clubs don’t charge a membership fee but have higher hourly rates instead.
