Ford's compact SUV competitor - basically a rebadged Mazda Tribute - didn't last very long in the UK. But unlike the slew of 'soft-roaders' that have flooded the market in recent years, the Maverick had old-school 4x4 sensibilities.

The Maverick was only sold for two years, from 2001 to 2003, so you can only buy one used. Ford's closest modern equivalent is the Kuga, although that's a much less rugged and more car-like vehicle.

Used Ford Maverick reviews

The Maverick offers a lot of car for the money, but you can expect high running costs, especially if you go for the 3.0-litre V6 automatic. There's no diesel version.
