The roadster revival started at Mazda, when the first MX-5 made its debut way back in 1990. A lightweight rear-wheel-drive two-seater, the MX-5 has been one of the most popular sports cars of the last two decades, and it's also been a consistently strong performer in Which? owner surveys. It lost its pop-up headlights in 1998 when the Mk2 range was launched. The MX-5 evolved further with the current Mk3 in 2005, and a year later it was joined by the Roadster Coupe with its useful folding hard-top roof. But does the MX-5 still have what it takes? Find out more in the Which? review.

We'd argue that the folding hard-top roof of the Roadster-Coupe is rather beside the point - the MX-5 was always meant to be a back-to-basics sports car. Still, the canvas-hooded concept remains on offer too, and there's also the choice of 1.8- and 2.0-litre engines; but were the 2009 updates enough to keep the MX-5 competitive into a new decade? Which? has the full lowdown.

The MX-5 is the legendary Japanese roadster that sticks to a very simple British formula. Is there a better value sports car than this third-generation MX-5?

Used Mazda MX-5 reviews

The Mazda MX-5 is a very popular used purchase, and for many, is a first step into sports car ownership. As a Mazda, it's more reliable than many roadsters of its type, though the oldest examples are inevitably showing signs of wear and tear by now. Like all MX-5s, the Mk2 (1998-2005) car is cheap to run and great fun to drive.
