As the replacement for the best-selling car of all time, the Toyota Corolla, the Auris has some pretty big boots to fill. While it succeeds in many areas, it's not proved as reliable as we'd expect, according to the 2010 Which? Car survey, and prices start fairly high compared with mainstream rivals.

On the surface there's not much to inspire about the Toyota Auris - it's competent and well-built. But it's easy to live with and economical, especially if you choose the Auris HSD hybrid, which was added to the range in 2010. There have been some issues with reliability, however.

While the Toyota Auris may seem pricey new, it's a good option as a second-hand car. That's because equipment levels outstrip mainstream rivals, such as the Ford Focus, and the Auris holds its value better too.
