The new Volkswagen Beetle has been in the current guise for over ten years, after the model was relaunched in 1999. It was the first deliberately retro car, but has since been surpassed by the Mini and the Fiat 500. Based on a ‘90s Volkswagen Golf, it hasn’t been updated, but any issues have been ironed out.

Despite being unchanged for over ten years, you can still buy a Beetle new from Volkswagen. You can choose between a hatchback of a Beetle Cabriolet convertible, and the range includes four petrol engines, including a 1.8T turbo, and a 1.9TDI turbodiesel, which we found to be the most economic with an average 53.3mpg.

Although the value of a used Volkswagen Beetle took a brief downturn when the Mini was launched, it has recovered and now retains value well. Because it’s based on a Volkswagen Golf, the Beetle is sound mechanically. However, glitches with early models means a service history is vital.
