The Volvo S40 badge first appeared in 1996, with a new-generation S40 arriving in 2004. This is Volvo's compact executive saloon and a rival for the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. The S40 is actually based on the Ford Focus platform. It's starting to feel its age now.

The S40 is the saloon version of the Volvo V40 and Volvo V50 estates. The 2004 S40 is the newest compact executive saloon from Volvo. Good looks and shared Sunderpinnings with the Ford Focus should help sales.

Used Volvo S40 reviews

The first-generation Volvo S40 of 1996-2004 is now feeling very long-in-the-tooth. The second-generation S40 saloon is a more convincing buy, offering good value, the prestige of the Volvo badge and strong safety credentials. Discover the full story behind buying a used S40 in our Which? report.
