V40 was the badge that Volvo gave to the estate body style variant of its first-generation S40 saloon (as sold between 1996 and 2004). The V40 is a safe car with a four-star EuroNCAP rating - better than almost any car for its age. Does the V40 make a good buy though?

New Volvo V40 reviews

You can't buy a Volvo V40 new any more - the estate version of the second-generation S40 was badged V50 instead. Second-hand V40s make a cheap and practical choice though - if not perfect on the reliability front. Click on the Used Volvo V40 tab to find out more.

Used Volvo V40 reviews

With the earliest V40s now almost 15 years old, used prices can be very cheap indeed. Even the latest examples (the V40 was last sold in 2004) aren't that expensive. V40 reliability hasn't been perfect though - read our full Which? review to discover the details.
