Volvo car reviews

After 12 years under Ford ownership, Sweden's number one car brand has been sold to Geely, China's biggest independent carmaker. Volvo's HQ will stay in Sweden, but some manufacturing is likely to shift to China.

Volvo's emphasis has always been on safety and build quality. These days, it's also pursuing a green agenda with its DRIVe products. The range of cars extends from the C30 three-door hatchback up to the big XC90 SUV, and Volvo effectively occupies a 'middle zone' in between the mainstream and prestige markets.

Volvo C30 reviews

The Volvo C30 entered the small family hatchback market in January 2007, going head-to-head with the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. It shares many of the same components as the popular Ford Focus, but the Volvo C30's looks are a lot more distinctive and it has a well-built and eye-catching interior. There are three petrol and two diesel engine sizes, and there are economy-optimised Volvo C30 diesels carrying the DRIVe badge.

Volvo C70 reviews

The Volvo C70 is a coupé-convertible with a folding metal hard-top roof, offering the high safety standard of Volvo as a car brand with an open-top four-seater design. It remains a relatively rare sight on Britain’s roads, mainly due to the tough competition in the sports/convertibles category. Rivals to the Volvo C70 include the Mercedes-Benz CLK, BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 convertibles.

Volvo S40 reviews

The Volvo S40 badge first appeared in 1996, with a new-generation S40 arriving in 2004. This is Volvo's compact executive saloon and a rival for the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. The S40 is actually based on the Ford Focus platform. It's starting to feel its age now.

Volvo S60 reviews

Volvo launched the S60 badge as long ago as 2000, with an all-new sporty S60 arriving in 2010. In both generations, it certainly looks distinctive - there's no other car like the S60 saloon. Safety is an S60 strong suit and the new version is a lot better to drive than the first one.

Volvo V50 reviews

After the Volvo V40 came the V50 estate, the five-door version of the current S40 saloon. Although it was originally launched back in 2004, the V50 is still one of the safest cars in its class. The V50 is an interesting alternative to cars like the Honda Accord and Mercedes-Benz C-class estates.

Volvo V60 reviews

Launched in 2010, the Volvo V60 is a compact estate car, however Volvo refers to it as a sports wagon. The Volvo V60 is an estate version of the Volvo S60, and it’s packed with some seriously cutting-edge safety technology – however, not everything is available as standard.
