My wedding photographs are poor quality, what can I do?

If your wedding photos are missing, damaged, or not of a good enough quality you should be able to claim a refund. In some cases you may be able to claim compensation.

Consumer Rights Act

When securing a wedding photographer it's important to agree ahead of the big day the minimum number of images that you want.

Make sure you seek references and see their portfolio beforehand.

Under the Consumer Rights Act, which superseded the Supply of Goods and Services Act on 1 October 2015, your photographs should be supplied with reasonable care and skill.

In a recent Which? survey nearly one in ten people (9%) married in the last five years said they were dissatisfied with their wedding photographer.  

If your pictures are missing, damaged or simply not up to scratch, you should be able to claim a full or partial refund for them.

In some cases you will also be able to claim compensation for loss of memory of the day.

To avoid problems, before you decide on a photographer, it is worth going to meet with them at their studio to discuss your requirements for style and the inclusion of certain shots to manage everyone's expectations. 

It is also worth bringing a spare camera on the day, in case yours breaks or runs out of batteries.

The photos have been lost 

If all of your photos have been lost by the photographer, you should be able to seek a full refund and potentially, compensation for loss of memory of the day.

The same applies for damaged or badly developed pictures.

If your pictures have not arrived in a reasonable time after the wedding, the photographer may be considered in breach of contract.

Before seeking a full refund and compensation write to the photographer with an ultimatum and date by which to provide the images.

The photographs are awful

You should be able to expect a reasonable quality of image from your photographer. 

If your pictures are so poor they can't be used, then you should be able to seek a full refund and compensation for loss of memory of the day. 

It's worth asking for an expert opinion on the quality of the images from another photographer to help prove any case you may have to make. 

If you have some pictures which are good quality but the rest are missing or unusable, then you should be able to claim a partial refund.

For example, if you order 100 photographs and only 20 are off a decent quality, then you should be entitled to an 80% refund.
