Counterfeit goods: your rights explained FAQs
Spotting fakes
How can I tell if goods are fake?
Fake goods are often inferior in quality and it may be obvious that they are not the real. However, new technology means that there are some sophisticated fakes around that can be hard to distinguish from the real thing.
When buying something mind your 'P's and 'Q's - place, price and quality – if one or more of these looks dodgy, steer clear.
Fake products sold online
What should I do if I've bought fake goods from eBay?
If the goods were sold as genuine they are not 'as described' and this means that the seller breached their contract with you. Return them and ask the seller for a refund.
If the seller refuses to give you a refund, then you could take the seller to court. You could also consider reporting the seller to trading standards.
If you spot a site that you believe might be supplying counterfeit goods, report the website.
Fake products from traders
What can I do if I've bought fake perfume from a market trader?
It's very unlikely that you will get your money back as you won't be able to locate the trader again.
If you're concerned that it might harm people, you could report it to your local trading standards department.
