What should I do if I fall seriously ill and need urgent treatment?

If you’re on a package holiday, contact the local tour representative or agent who has a ‘duty of care’ towards you. They can liaise with medical staff and help with any accommodation or flight changes. 

Otherwise, go straight to your travel insurer’s medical assistance company – call them before going for treatment if possible, even if you’re in a European country with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). They should deal with the medics by phone or via a local agent, and settle bills, but don’t assume that you’ll be covered everywhere – if you go to a pricey private clinic rather than the nearest state hospital, your provider may make you pay any difference in costs. 

Get a receipt for any treatment. In most European countries, an EHIC entitles you to the same state-provided medical care as nationals, but this may not cover you for all treatment and won’t cover your repatriation to the UK. If consular officials are notified, they may be able to visit within 48 hours, contact your relatives and insurance company, and provide you with translation help. 

What if I need to cut short my trip because a relative becomes seriously ill back home?

If you’re on a package holiday, contact your rep who should be able to make arrangements quickly. 

Otherwise, contact the airline directly. On some long-haul flights, the return date can be changed for free or an admin fee, as long as there are seats available. Your carrier may also waive charges on compassionate grounds. 

If you have to pay for a new flight, keep all receipts to claim it back on insurance. Most policies should include cover (often £3,000-£5,000) for curtailed trips, but many will only pay out if it is a direct relative. Read the terms and conditions carefully as the definition of a close relative varies from policy to policy.
