simplehuman has launched a stylish new range of stainless-steel canisters for storing dry food, such as coffee, on your worktop. Their sleek design will definitely appeal to those with a modern kitchen.

As with other simplehuman products, the canisters have a stainless-steel finish that's billed as fingerprint-proof. We had a look at one to see if this worked. After passing the medium-sized canister around a few pairs of hands we found that finger prints were visible up close, especially on the lid. However, we found that they were easily wiped away with a dry cloth, so it was much better than a normal stainless-steel kitchen appliance.

You open the canister with just one hand using its push button. The lid lifts in a smooth, sweeping motion, which is a nice touch. We weren't that impressed with the 'ergonomic' handle, however. You can fit just two fingers through it, and, if the canister is full, the weight puts an uncomfortable strain on your hand. You can use the handle to drag the canister across your worktop without having to touch the steel, though.

The canisters also have a dishwasher-proof plastic liner and an air-tight seal. The lid has a space for labelling contents, complete with a clear protective cover. You can go to the simplehuman website and customise your own labels to print off rather than writing them by hand.

Available in five different sizes, ranging in price from £25 to £40, from www.simplehuman.co.uk, and independent retailers.

Pros: Stylish food storage for your kitchen worktops. Fingerprints and smudges not as noticeable as other stainless steel products

Cons: Nearly impossible to pick up by handle if full
