Cooking gets the 'green' treatment with a new range of Typhoon saucepans and frying pans. GreenPans are made with a new coating called Thermolon, but are they up to scratch when it comes to frying an egg, or boiling potatoes?

Typhoon's GreenPans are a range of saucepans and frying pans designed to be high performance and kind to the environment.

The pans are sold in partially recycled packaging, but their main 'green' claim is that they're made with Thermolon, a ceramic non-stick coating that is said to require only half the amount of energy to produce as Teflon (resulting in fewer CO2 emissions).

GreenPan saucepans are heat resistant up to 450ºC, compared with 260ºC for traditional pans, and this may help to protect the pan's interior for longer. Typhoon also says that GreenPans have faster, and more even, heat distribution. 

We tried a GreenPan frying pan and our first impressions were good. It heated up quickly and food didn’t stick. It's also lighter than a cast iron pan, which is the usual alternative to Teflon. Some consumers in the USA have reported problems with GreenPans scratching on the outside after short periods of time, but this isn’t something we found when we tried them out. 

GreenPans may take less energy to produce than traditional pans, but during cooking they're likely to use a similar amount of gas or electricity. So if you’re considering GreenPans as a step towards greener living, we'd suggest only switching from your existing pans when they reach the end of their life. Cons: Thermolon is a new coating so as yet there's no long-term view of its performance
