Babyliss i-Stubble 7890U beard trimmer February 2011

How does Babyliss' new beard trimmer measure up?

The Babyliss For Men 7890u i-Stubble beard trimmer claims to provide ‘the ultimate in stubble control’ with 15 length settings ranging from 0.4mm to 5mm. A Which? product researcher took it home to give it a try – here are his first impressions.

Once we gave the i-Stubble its 16-hour initial charge, we found it easy to use. It has only three buttons – one to turn it off and on, and two to adjust the length setting. An electronic display tells you which setting it’s on.

Stubble control

It may seem impressive to have a choice of 15 length settings but the difference between many of them is small. Between 0.4mm and 2mm there are seven settings with just 0.2mm between each.

Men who like to cultivate longer beards may find that 5mm – the longest setting – is too short for them.

But most people will be able to find their ideal setting with the i-Stubble, and it seemed to work impressively.

Quick and easy

We found the Babyliss was so effective that we needed to shave an area only once. It worked effectively all over, so you should be left with evenly trimmed stubble.

It’s fairly light and is comfortable to hold. Our researcher found using it painless and didn’t suffer any cuts.

The i-Stubble comes with a brush that makes it easy to clean and lubricant that should help prevent wear and tear on the blades.

It plugs into the shaver socket, so you’ll need an adapter if you want to use or charge it using a conventional three-pronged plug socket.

It’s available from Amazon, Argos and Boots for around £50.

Pros: Effective, comfortable to use, plenty of short length settings to choose from

Cons: Not so good for trimming longer beards, expensive
