Electric shavers: Compare features & prices Remington R8150 review

This mains and rechargeable R8150 shaver from Remington is dry shave only, so it can't be used in the shower. We couldn't wait to try its 'Flex and Pivot' heads for ourselves to find out if they give a comfortable shave, and to find out more about this shaver with beard trimmer.

had two of these, both of them broke
I have had two of these since Dec 2011. Neither have given anything like a close shave. The first shaver's trimmer broke off after 9 months; and after only 5 months use of its replacement the drive spindle for one of the rotary heads became loose and has now completely disintegrated. The build quality is not good. Very much not recommended.

Remington R6150 Rotary
I think this is updated version. Similar to others, took at least 10mins to shave and got a sore face. Not close either. Returned to Remington explaining problems and said that I wish I had kept my foil shaver. Within the month they sent me a replacement Foil shaver F5800 which is fantastic. Very close shave within 4 mins - Oh joy. How Which can say they get a close shave with Rotary I'll never know!

Extremely disappointed. I got a very cheap price through Amazon - £39 inc postage, but it just doesn't work for me. I have a beard (I use a proper beard trimmer for that, so don't need the in-built one), so I was looking for a shaver for my neck etc. The Remington grabs - painfully! - at me, and just doesn't work! It won't shave close at all. There was a small section of the plastic trim broken away from the body, under the shaver head, so I'm sending it back. I hope for refund - and will try something simpler! My old Philips was fine for years...

My previous shavers were primitive so this is an improvement. I can't comment on how it compares for closeness and comfort with other current models. However, as Which? rated it 5 stars for Ease Of Use, then the others must be pretty awful. The LCD display is unclear and not backlit and so it has to be held under a light to understand it. LEDs would hae been better. The symbols used on the display are indecipherable and the manual is no help: apparently there are symbols to show when the shaver is being charged and when it is fully charged, but the manual doesn't show where these are or what they look like. Also there is no protective cover for the heads (the manual implies one is included) or cleaning brush. The manual is badly translated from German.

Remington R8150
Further to my report below, I have had to buy a Braun Series3 330s-4 to replace the awful Remington R8150. The Braun is outstanding and I will report under product name.

Remington R8150
Oh dear what a mistake I've made. I've used dry electric shavers for around 45 years without a problem. My trusty Braun electric twin foil shaver required replacing. After reading the Which? report, I bought the Remington R8150. This Remington is making my neck very sore, something I've not experienced before and is rather unpleasant. Looks like I've wasted my money and will need to get a Braun Foil again.

Bought the R8150 on the basis of Best Buy rating but in comparison with earlier Philips shavers the movement of the heads are less responsive to the contours of the face and jaw line. Gives a close shave provided you take more time. The beard trimmer is definitely more effective than the Philips equivalent. Disappointed that an expensive shaver is not supplied with either a clip on cover to protect the rotary heads or a cleaning brush. The cover costs £2.50 (plus £2.04 p&p) from Remington.

Battery life
@2011-08-05 21:58:13.843 - we don’t test how long each battery holds its power so we can’t say how quickly this shaver’s battery will discharge. All rechargeable batteries eventually discharge over time, even if they’re not used. This Remington model has a Nickel Metal Hydride battery – commonly known as NiMH. The rate of power loss in NiMH batteries will vary from battery manufacturer to manufacturer.

If you’re specifically looking for a battery that holds its charge for as long as possible, choose a model that comes with a Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery. Li-Ion batteries generally discharge at a slower rate than NiMH ones. The Best Buys that have Li-Ion batteries are: Panasonic ES-RF41 and ES-LA93, Braun 7-720 and 7-790CC, and Philips AquaTouch AT890, PowerTouch PT730, PowerTouch PT870CC, PowerTouch PT920, SensoTouch 3D RQ1280 and SensoTouch 2D RQ1180/22.

Thank you for your comments
@TonyMB – we’re sorry to hear that you’ve had a bad and painful experience with this shaver. When we test shavers we ask a number of men to try them out and rate their experiences so we can see how closely and comfortably they shave different hair and skin types. This way, we can analyse the findings of several individuals to give an overall verdict. Unfortunately, this didn’t match your personal experience with this shaver.

We would really like to thank you for taking the time to post your comments - it helps us to review the way we test shavers and allows other members to take your findings on board. We don’t test how long each shaver takes to shave because this varies so considerably depending on level and frequency of hair growth. Again, your findings will be useful to others thinking about buying this model. We haven’t confirmed our next batch of shavers for testing, but we’ll keep Wahl in mind.

@2011-08-05 21:58:13.843 – we will look into this and come back with some information as soon as we can.

Poor Battery Life
Before buying this or any Remington product I would like to know if the battery holds it's charge. I have an older model razor and a relatively new beard trimmer, the batteries of both self discharge in little more than two weeks from full charge if not used.

Very poor
Fully agree with other reviewers, not a close shave at all, worst I've used in 35 years. My skin got raw from trying too long/too hard. In desperation I changed to a cheap alternative from Amazon (the Wahl Ultima 7200) which turned out to be the closest shave ever ! Which? PLEASE include the Wahl in your future reviews, this is a gem !
