Make the most of water Water efficiently

How and when you water can make a big difference to your plants and to the amount of water you use. Our Best Buy equipment will help you to make the most of this precious resource.

Best Buy irrigation kits

Drip nozzle irrigation systems fitted to an outside tap are water  and labour-saving ways of watering containers. By simply turning on an outside tap for a few minutes a day, water is delivered just where it’s needed. Porous hoses – also known as leaky pipes or seep hoses – can be equally good for watering plants in the ground – particularly if they're set out in rows. Both of our Best Buys below are suitable for watering up to ten pots or baskets.

  • Garden Systems MHG10 Micro Hanging Garden 10 Basket Kit
  • Hozelock Maxi Auto Kit 2755

We also recommend the Easy to Grow Irrigation Kit  for watering tomatoes

Watering tips

Be selective about what you water. Concentrate on containers, seedlings, anything newly planted, leafy veg, potatoes, leeks, peas and beans forming pods, soft fruit developing
berries and tomatoes

  • Water early in the morning or during the evening so that less is lost by evaporation
  • In summer, stand your containers in pot saucers to prevent water draining so quickly, carrying nutrients away with it
  • Be sure to water the soil or compost, not the leaves
  • Position pots and hanging baskets out of the midday sun so they don't dry out so quickly
  • Don't water your lawn – it will turn green again in autumn regardless of how brown it gets in summer
  • Raising the mower blades will keep it greener longer
