How Which? tests fridge freezers
When we test fridge freezers in our lab, we carry out 215 assessments which measure how good they are at cooling, freezing and keeping quiet, and how energy efficient they are. This allows us to tell you exactly what to expect from each fridge freezer before you buy it, including:
- Fridge power - the faster your food is chilled, the longer it'll last and the more nutrients it will retain. We part-fill the fridge with gel packs and, once they're cool, add more gel packs to simulate you adding food to a fridge already containing other groceries. We then record how long it takes the gel packs to reach 5°C.
- Freezer power - again using gel packs, we measure how many kilograms a part-filled freezer can get down to -18°C in 24 hours. We also examine how long the freezer could preserve food for in the event of a power cut.
- Running costs - fridge freezers can be expensive to run as they're always switched on. We measure how much energy each fridge freezer uses in 24 hours, and use that figure to calculate its annual running costs.
