Using a ladder

Using a step ladder

If you're on a ladder, use cordless tools if possible

If you’re using a stepladder make sure it’s on a flat, level surface and that you have three points of contact with it - for example, two feet and a hand. Hold on to the rails, not the rungs, so you can slide hands up and down and don’t have to take them off when you move. Keep your body centred on the ladder – don’t lean too far – and always wear non-slip shoes. Also, make sure you’re not on your own in case you have an accident.

Using power tools

If you’re using power tools, follow the instructions carefully. Don’t wear loose clothes and if you have long hair, tie it back. Make sure you don’t trip over wires by keeping them away from the area you’re working on, and if you're on a ladder, use cordless tools if possible. Make sure you avoid wires and pipes if you’re drilling.
