Dulux PaintPod and PaintPod Compact Dulux PaintPod
Time-saving but not perfect
Power-assisted painting
Dulux wants to revolutionise the way you paint with its new £69.99 PaintPod, and reckons that this power-assisted roller system will help you ‘reclaim your weekend, because painting just got easier’.
It should save you time with its self-cleaning function, but it's not perfect and it is expensive.
Using the Dulux PaintPod
The main unit is about the size of a cylinder vacuum cleaner and powered by a 12V transformer. It has four control buttons: paint, pause, drain and clean.
Simply insert a tub of specially-formulated PaintPod paint (a choice of 33 colours of matt emulsion in five-litre tubs – brilliant white is £19.99, colours are £29.99), and it will be pumped to the roller via a tube when you press the trigger.
Then roll as normal, but without the hassle of refilling the roller tray, and with fewer drips and splashes.

Cleaning the Dulux PaintPod
The 10-minute self-cleaning function sucks paint back through the tube, and then pumps five litres of warm water through the roller head, before you give it a final rinse by hand. It left the tube with some paint residue, but was good enough, and we enjoyed having a cuppa and a rest while it whirred away.
There's clever technology involved too – the battery-powered roller communicates wirelessly with the Pod.
However, it can be heavy to carry (up to 12.5kg when full), the pump is quite noisy, and the tube needs replacing after every 50 litres of paint. Dulux has thought of most things though – there's even a handy triangular edging brush provided, and an optional extra-long handle for ceilings.
Pros Innovative, should save time, self-cleaning function
Cons Expensive, you'll still need to do some roller and brush cleaning, can be heavy, pump is quite noisy
