Built-in ovens: Cooker spares Oven spares

Most ovens are electric although there are some gas models on the market. You can find single and double ovens with self-cleaning interiors and multi-function cooking. Find out here about the kind of problems built-in ovens face, how much it costs to repair them and where to go to buy spares.

Common oven problems

These are the most common problems we've found with range cookers.

  • Oven not heating up
  • Oven light
  • Broken fan

Oven not heating up The most common problem with built-in ovens is the oven not heating up properly. This is caused by a faulty oven element or thermostat. A new element will cost between £30 and £90 and a thermostat will cost from £40 to £80.

Oven light Your problem is easily resolved if the oven bulb has blown. A new bulb will cost around £5, if you need a new lamp-holder that will cost between £30-60.

Broken fan A broken fan means the heat won’t circulate properly round the oven. Fans can develop faults due to a build-up of fat and food residue from cooking. A replacement fan motor will cost between £40 and £100.

Hiring a professional to do the work for you

Unless the job is simple and cosmetic, such as replacing new oven shelf, if you’ve got a gas oven make sure that any repairs are carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If the repair is for an electric oven, it will also be wise to hire a professional to do the work for you. Visit the Gas Safe Register site to find a Gas Safe-registered engineer and use Which? Local to find an electrician recommended by Which? members in your area.
