The John Lewis microwaves we’ve tested tend to score well or excellently for speed of cooking and quality of food. They also tend to score well for ease of use, but half of the models only achieve average scores for defrosting, and one model scores poorly for grilling.

To test microwaves for grilling performance, we measure how widely and evenly the grill browns slices of white, crustless bread. Poorer microwaves tend to over-brown the food in the centre, while leaving the outer edges pale.
