The Baumatic BO788SS double gas oven cooks using conventional bottom heat in the main oven, and has a grill in the top compartment. Gas ovens often suffer from uneven heating, so we were keen to find out whether this built-in oven would bake more evenly than its rivals.

Oven heat distribution
We measure how evenly heat is distributed around the oven cavity.
Oven controls accuracy
This is the difference between the set oven temperatures, and the temperatures the ovens actually reached in our tests.
Oven preheating speed
How quickly the main oven heats up to set temperatures.
Grill
How evenly it toasted using the grill.
Baking
We bake a large fatless sponge cake and measure the evenness of browning and how well it rises. This test was introduced for all ovens tested from 2011.
Ease of use
How easy the oven and grill are to use. This includes the controls, visibility, doors, how easy it is to adjust shelves and to load and unload food in both oven and grill.

Ease of cleaning with self-clean functions and by hand.
Flexibility of space
We test the flexibility of space inside ovens with joints of beef, chickens and turkeys on roasting trays to see whether the space provided, and the shelf arrangement, allow them to fit in. We then check whether the ovens are flexible enough to allow another roasting tray to be fitted in above. We carry out this test on both top and main ovens.
Energy use
We simulate roasting a whole chicken by heating 2kg of bricks in the main oven for 1hr 40 mins. Electric conventional ovens are set to 200ºC, electric fan ovens are set to 170ºC and gas ovens at gas mark 6. This test was introduced for ovens tested from 2011.
