Freestanding cookers: Compare features & prices Cannon C50GLW review Back to Results

The freestanding Cannon C50GLW gas cooker has two cooking cavities - the upper one can be used for baking or grilling, and the lower is the main oven - as well as a gas hob and a programmable digital timer. We tested all of these in our labs to see how well this gas cooker works.

Grill is unsatisfactory-uneven browning and needs its own shelf for the pan to sit on. There is also a fan (not mentioned in the handbook) that turns itself on even when the grill is only in use for a few minutes - and sometimes it stays on for ages with no way of turning it off except to turn off the electrical supply. The hot air blasts out of the front, just below the hob - it would be better coming out of the vents at the back of the hob - at least it would exit via my separate cooker hood.Getting the pan in the best position under the burners is not easy as the burner length is quite short. The hob burners cannot be turned to a really low setting, so you have to keep a closer watch on simmering pans. The oven cooks evenly but I don't know how accurate the thermostat is - the lower settings can sometimes seem a bit fierce. The bottom of the oven is very close to floor level - this sounds a bit silly but if it was just 2-4 cm higher it would make access easier. Also the oven light stays on as long as the oven is in use which is not really necessary - and attracts insect on summer evenings!!The control taps are clearly marked and easy to use as is the clock/timer but very difficult to clean and to keep clean. Glass doors on grill and oven are easy to remove and wash though what I can do about the remains of a cheese sauce spill that is inside an inaccessible part of the grill door I do not know!!The cooker is very sturdy and replaced a 20 year old New World model which was FANTASTIC - If it had still been available I would have bought one and it was only because it would not fit into my new kitchen that it had to go. Bit of a disappointment, due to design mistakes.
