The freestanding Zanussi ZCV661MWC electric cooker has two ovens and self-cleaning oven wall linings. We've looked at how well the hob, grill and ovens of this electric cooker work to see whether it makes the grade as a Best Buy.

Top oven grill is very quick (I burnt the toast the first time as I wasn't expecting it to be ready!) and the grill pan enormous - no problems with warping as in the other reviews. Great too for everyday baking. Bottom oven has great options - bread, meringues, pizza cooked to perfection. Timer is really easy to use. Cleaning is a doddle - especially the knobs for the hob which are usually a complete pain on other ovens, due to clever design. No freeplay in the knobs as in other reviews on older model. Looks like Zanussi have fixed issues with the other model and this new version is fantastic. Vastly better than my old Smeg! Pros: Cons:

When I did start to use it, here are a few of problems I encountered - no space for all of them:1 Grill pan too large, heavy and unbalanced, no handle, impossible to seat it on the runners without getting on my knees to see where I was putting it2 Terrible grinding noise as grill pan is inserted, lots of sooty dust being ground off sides of grill - on to the food?3 If using what was supposed to be half a grill, the outermost element heated but the middle stayed cold, hence grilling was very uneven and slow. (photos on file) If using the whole grill, food either didn't cook or was frizzled to death.4 No way of determining what temperatures the ovens reached - I had to buy oven thermometers, and keep kneeling in front of the oven to check temperature5 Temperature control in ovens very poor, wide fluctuations6 Bottom oven cooked very unevenly, cakes would burn on one side & be virtually uncooked on the other7 Lots of steam from rear of ovenBoth the on-line supplier and the manufacturer assured me that the cooker was working to spec. I couldn't wait to get rid of it, but it has taken me two years to save up for a replacement, a Hotpoint due next week. I give it one tick as the hob was reasonable, but overall it was most disappointing. Pros: Cons:

We had read the reviews at the time about minor issues ,which we thought we could live with.Much better than our little 500mm wide solid plate hob. The ceramic hob heats up quickly and is easy to keep clean. The The top oven is used often, mid week, and has impressed us with its speed of reaching operating temperature and evenness of cooking! The grill pan does ,as other reviewers have mentioned, warp quite badly, & although large will fit nicely into our dishwasher .The main oven also cooks the weekend roast beautifully , and there is plenty of room for the parsnips and potatoes. We bought the cooker from John Lewis who failed to deliver on the actual day,but in their usual High standards of customer service recovery, recompensed us with quite a few JL vouchers to make up for my wasted day of waiting at home. Pleased with both product ,& seller. Pros: Cons:

I also dislike the noise it makes when you turn it off, it goes on for too long.Agree with grill pan issue as above. Overall which should have been more critical.Am thinking of selling it and getting a brand new one !! Pros: Cons:

In general, I have to take the temperature that the recipe calls for and subtract around 15 degrees. My previous oven, a Neff circotherm, had an exact temperature conversion which always worked. With the Zanussi, I find myself hovering around the oven looking for signs that a cake is baking too quickly or too slowly. It's probably a good idea to look at the user manual before buying a large appliance like this. I'm disappointed with my Zanussi oven. Pros: Cons:

I do miss my previous eye level grill and I do miss the gas but I cannot say that electric is not as good. Grill works well but it seems a waste to heat such a large area for one slice of toast.A very good cooker overall. Pros: Cons:

After coping with an Aga, which is completely uncontrollable, this is bliss. Heats up very quickly, and then keeps to that temperature, where an Aga just gets cooler the more you cook.My only gripe is that in order to simmer, or gently fry onions etc, it's necessary to heat the rings to at least a 4 and then reduce the heat. Putting it straight on to a 1 or 2 produces no heat at all. Pros: Cons:

When you slide it in it scratches the self cleaning service and makes a horrible scraping noise that makes me cringe! Then when the grill is on the grill pan expands (naturally as it's metal) and then gets stuck so you can't then slide it out to get your grilled food. Not sure how this was missed in the testing. I had wanted an induction hob but decided, having moved to an area with no gas supply, that induction is still too expensive. I am pleased I didn't spend the extra ££ as I am happy with the ceramic hob. It could be more responsive but is far far better than the electric plates I had before and I have got used to the timing, turning down plates early to allow them to cool to simmer at the right time. The ovens are quick to heat and as for oven-ready indicators, with experience it is easy enough to guess when the top oven has reached heat and the top oven is not intended for foods that require precise temperatures, the fan oven is far better for that. The main oven is large and it is a plus to have multifunction. My only reservation is that the grill/roasting pan is huge, very cumbersome to wash, so I have bought a smaller one which I rest on the top oven shelf. wrote: | KMJ000 wrote: Design fault ????? 2 I failed to include this in my first submission. The temperature control knobs: You move them to the indicated temperature setting and then let go. When you return to move temp up or down there is "free-play" in the knob movement so that you are never really confident what temperature you are setting the oven to operate at. I.e. the knob will move ten degrees up or down before you feel any resistance and recognise that the temp control stem beneath the knob is being engaged. Again hope this helps Pros: Cons:

wrote: | KMJ000 wrote: Design fault ????? Everyone appears to talk about the 'oven ready indicator'. If this is a minus then ok, but its not something that I have had on any of my previous ovens so I have not noted its absence. What I did notice straight away is the absence of any clock/timer. But this may not be of importance to everyone. My reall feedback here is regarding the grill pan. Once heated it WARPS very badly, so much so that it is not possible to push it back into the sliders in the wall of the top oven, and food in one corner of the grill pan is brought that much closer to the heat element.Despite the the above I would still recommend this cooker. I am having to adjust cooking times and lower tray heights because this machine is so more efficient than anything I have cooked with before.Hope this helps Pros: Cons:

wrote: | kinglouis wrote: Utterly brilliant This oven has made cooking a delight and joy. The hobs get very hot very quickly, the grill is superb, and both top and bottom ovens are consistent and BIG! It cleans easily and the knobs are out of reach (on top) of our toddler's grasp. We don't find the lack of temperature gauge for the top oven disgusting, it heats up really quickly. Pros: Cons:
